EU Delegation to China launches EU-China Climate and Environmental Think Tanks Engagement Initiative

On 6 November, the Delegation of the European Union to China launched the EU-China green think tank project, which aims to promote engagement among researchers and scholars, and to strengthen EU-China cooperation on pressing global climate and environmental issues.

EU Ambassador to China, Jorge Toledo, opened the event. Ambassador Toledo emphasised the significance of engagement on green transition and blue economy in the context of EU-China relations, underscoring the urgency of collaborative efforts to address global environmental challenges. He noted, “think tank exchanges between the EU and China ensure that each side is properly informed about the other side’s policies, while jointly advancing public diplomacy and public policy to come up with innovative solutions to the most urgent problems of our planet. All of this strengthens the relationship between the EU and China, so let us embrace this opportunity to add a new layer to our cooperation”.

Chen Xianbin, Direktor des Zentrums für Landkonsolidierung und -sanierung des chinesischen Ministeriums für natürliche Ressourcen, betonte den Beitrag des Projekts zur grünen Zusammenarbeit. Er stellte fest: „Das Projekt konzentriert sich auf die grüne Entwicklung, die Durchführung von kooperativer Forschung, Dialog und Austausch, ausgehend von Konzepten, Politiken, Praktiken und Erfahrungen, das Verständnis für die Anliegen und Unterschiede der anderen, die Vertiefung des Verständnisses, das gegenseitige Lernen und den gegenseitigen Nutzen in der Zusammenarbeit, den gemeinsamen Aufbau der Grundlage einer ökologischen Zivilisation und den gemeinsamen Weg der grünen Entwicklung“. Herr Chen betonte außerdem, dass der Sektor der natürlichen Ressourcen eine grüne, kohlenstoffarme Entwicklung aktiv fördert und vorantreibt und bedankte sich für die Unterstützung aller an diesem Projekt beteiligten Parteien.

Representing the Hanns-Seidel Foundation, which leads this project, Markus Ferber, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Foundation, delivered remarks via video message. For him, “launching this project is more than a collaborative effort; it represents a new path within the EU-China relationship. Together […] we are fostering mutual understanding, building trust, and addressing pressing challenges in green governance and sustainable development.”

Debora Tydecks-Zhou, Chief Representative of the Hanns Seidel Foundation’s Beijing office, introduced the project’s objectives and upcoming initiatives, expressing enthusiasm for the project’s role in fostering dialogue between European and Chinese think tanks.
